Vocabulary Words:

unheeded

lull
automaton
warily

Journal Questions:

1. FRIZZLE MY SCHIZZLE. In the nursery rhyme, the next victim "got frizzled up" which means to burn. Another word for to burn somebody is to trick somebody, as in "Oooo, burn!"

How does Vera trick Lombard? Also, what will happen to Lombard's corpse if it's left out in the open sun? (one paragraph)

2. VERA SENSES HUGO IN THE ROOM. What two lines of text tell us that Vera believed that Hugo was in her bedroom at the time of her hanging? Do you think he was there? Was anyone there, really? How do you think the noose got there in the room, conveniently waiting for her? (one or two paragraphs)

3. AND THEN THERE WERE... NONE? There are no suspects left. What? That's it? How can that be?

Speculate on who you think was the murderer and how the murderer might have been planned and executed the grand scheme. (at least one big paragraph)

4. EMOTIONAL SOFT SPOTS. Everyone has certain vulnerabilities, or parts of their personalities where they are emotionally sensitive. Clearly Vera had hers. Someone appears to have not only known her weaknesses, but to have manipulated her with them.

What was she sensitive to? What specific manipulations by the killer triggered Vera's descent into madness? In other words, what did U.N. Owen do to get her to go over the edge? (one very detailed paragraph)

  4. Q: wait can the murder be owen if you wanted????????????

A: Sure. But you'd need to explain your thinking as to how it all went down.

Q: for question #3 what if we already know who the murderer is? how should we answer the question?

A: In that case I'd write about the person I knew who WASN'T the murderer, but who was the second best guess. I'd then write about how they would have been the right choice and how they could have pulled it off.

  7. Hi I just logged on here to see what the epilouge work was and I saw the comment about "for question #3 what if we already know who the murderer is? how should we answer the question?". I was working on chapter 16 during class today and for #3 I did the work about the killer, not another who could have done it. Should I change it?

A: I wouldn't worry about it. Either way is fine.

Q: or #2, there are more than just two lines that say she senses Hugo in the room. Does the question mean what two lines while she's in the room or before she's in the room?

A: Choose the most clear two lines.

Q: For #4, do you mean you did she kill herself?

A: I believe that is what happened, but there are several ways to interpret it at this point.

Q: iwanted to know when the test would be

A: Comprehension test should be Wednesday, vocabulary Friday is the plan.

Q: dont get number 4. All the killer really did was set up a noose. And he didn't really lure her into her room at all.

A: You have to see the big picture and the little details. Think about all the little things and how they added up.
