CHAPTER IV

MINI-LESSON: The Importance of Being Thorough

I'm expanding the 3ESD to now be 4ESSD in order to help emphasize the importance of thoroughness in your responses.

4Es = Elaborate, Example, Evidence, Explanation
SSD = Specific Supporting Details

You have to not only tell your ideas, but show them -- demonstrate them. You have to assume the reader doesn't know what you mean. Use words like "Because..." Connect the dots of your thoughts.

Many of you are already there. Some of you are improving but need more help. And a few are really not putting forward the effort required to be successful.

Lastly, and this is key... filling the page with more words doesn't necessarily mean that there are more ideas. Avoid repeating the same thing. Avoid just putting down information for it's own sake. Focus, organize and be precise with your ideas!

Okay. Here we go...

ASSIGNMENTS

Vocabulary Words: reconnaissance, pukka sahib, tumult, epistolary, bewilderment.

Journal Prompts:

1. Getting into their "head space." Notice how from time to time the author chooses to go into the internal world of her characters, sharing their thoughts, dreams, hallucinations, and feelings. Examine one particular incidence of this that happened in the last 4 chapters by...

a) ...naming the chapter the event occurred in and the name of the specific character (one number, one name)

b) ...explaining where they were physically in the reality of the story world at the time (one sentence)

c) ...explaining what was going on in the character's mind - where were they in their head? Who or what were they thinking about? (one paragraph, summarize with at least four sentences -- include details)

d) ...explaining why this is an effective tool for storytelling. Why does Agatha do this? What do we gain as readers? How does it improve the story? Why does she bother? (one paragraph, at least three good solid points)

2. Island Research. Use the internet to research and hunt down the name of the real island that Indian Island was based upon. Use the clues that are apparent in the text to narrow your search: where in England is it? and who wrote the book?

Write the name of the island down. (two words)

BONUS: Use Google Maps to print out a satellite photo of the actual island. It does not have to be in color, but must be framed so that it is clear. (one print out)

3. Reactions and Accusations. Track how each character (that's EACH character) reacts to their individual accusations of murder on the gramophone. Who takes responsibility? Who makes excuses? Who blames others? Explain each character. (a bullet list of 9 characters with commentary)

4. So... Whodunnit so far? At this point you are probably already suspecting someone of being the killer. Who is your current pick? Give three intelligent, well thought out reasons why they are the most likely candidate at this time. (one paragraph, at least three supporting points)

38 comments:

  1. This is getting easier each chapter. the first chapter took me almost two hours but this chapter only took about 30-40 mins!! the book is getting better too!!!

  2. do we have to cite where we got the Indian Island research?
If there is more than one explanation for Indian Island, should we include everything?

  3. this whole chapter of questions for the jurnal took me 3 and a half hours... is there any way or do you have any ideas to help me with this problem???

  4. QUESTION: do we have to cite where we got the Indian Island research? If there is more than one explanation for Indian Island, should we include everything?

ANSWER: No citation is needed. Just the name. The question doesn't ask for any explanation. It asks for the name of the actual island that Indian Island was based on.

QUESTION: this whole chapter of questions for the jurnal took me 3 and a half hours... is there any way or do you have any ideas to help me with this problem???

ANSWER: Come see me during rec if you are struggling to work efficiently. I'd be glad to help.

  5. I wrote one big paragraph that sums up everything instead of individual ones. Is that okay? (I did include all of the info).

  6. QUESTION: I wrote one big paragraph that sums up everything instead of individual ones. Is that okay? (I did include all of the info).

ANSWER: If you mean one big paragraph for all 4 questions that would be very difficult to read and very cluttered. Probably a bad idea.

If you mean that you wrote one big paragraph for each question (1,3 and 4) separately that would be fine.

Question 3 would work better as a series of bullets with spaces between each character, but I would accept it in paragraph form.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I did one paragraph of #1, but I'm not doing that for 2-4.

    ReplyDelete
  8. In #2, for the bonus, what do you mean by "framed"?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Mr. Chappell
What do you mean in question 2 "Who wrote the book?"?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've been looking all over for the words in the book to the point where i think there is no point. Why do we have to find ALL the pages and sentences and how would i get it?

    ReplyDelete
  11. QUESTION: Mr. Chappell
What do you mean in question 2 "Who wrote the book?"?

ANSWER: Who is the author of the book? The writer. Her name is on the cover.

You can use that information to help aid in your internet research.

I can give you hints, but I can't do the work for you.

  12. QUESTION:

In #2, for the bonus, what do you mean by "framed"?

    ANSWER:
I mean make it look nice inside the little window. You DO NOT have to go out and buy a picture frame, that would be just plain silly.

    QUESTION:
I've been looking all over for the words in the book to the point where i think there is no point. Why do we have to find ALL the pages and sentences and how would i get it?

    ANSWER:
    You sound frustrated.

There is a point. By finding the word in the context of the sentence it came from you can then choose which definition best matches. Otherwise you're just guessing.

Also, by seeing the word used correctly in a sentence you will have a higher chance of actually LEARNING to incorporate the word into your own vocabulary.

This shouldn't be too hard: there are only ten pages. If you are having a difficult time scanning the text to find the right words, feel free to see me for some tips. You deserve success for your efforts. :)

  13. this is way hard. i think the book is gettig intresting but the work is gettig harder.

  14. you know if you listin to music when doing it you dont get brourd.

    Michael Arwashan.

  15. For the bonus question, on question 2, do we get extra credit if we do bring it in or is it just like a this would be great if you can but you get no reward if you add the extra effort?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I just looked at wikipedia trying to find the answer for question 2, and it says who dies, when, and how. I suggest not looking there.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i am very confused as how to do number one. are we supposed to put all a,b,c, and d in one paragraph together?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Okay, STUPID QUESTION ALERT!!!
When you say "4 sentences", can we write 3 if one of them is really detailed? Not overflowing with information, but just says enough.

    ReplyDelete
  19. QUESTION: i am very confused as how to do number one. are we supposed to put all a,b,c, and d in one paragraph together?

    ANSWER: Sure. That will work.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mr. Chappell-
I have written AT LEAST one paragraph for each character on their reactions and such. Am I writing too much? It is not frustrating for me because I enjoy it, but will you be frustrated reading it? What should I consider doing differently?
    Thanks a ton!

  21. QUESTION:

    Mr. Chappell-
I have written AT LEAST one paragraph for each character on their reactions and such. Am I writing too much? It is not frustrating for me because I enjoy it, but will you be frustrated reading it? What should I consider doing differently?
    Thanks a ton!

ANSWER: One sentence or so for each will suffice. However, don't let that you stop you. You are, like many of the most excellent students I'm lucky enough to teacher, are a "real go-getter." Be proud. I love reading your guys writing, especially when I can see the joy in it.

  25. Question...again. Sorry! I was wondering for the last question "whodunnit" are we able to pick mr. and mrs. rogers and classify them as one killer because they are married and are a team. I just thought that it wouldn't be likely one of them kept something as horrible as killing from the other.
Thanks AGAIN!! And thank you for your other response!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good idea, Cate. That would be a fresh choice.

    ReplyDelete

  28. There are some glitches keeping student's comments from being posted. I'll try to retype them here.

Here's one that I can read but won't "send":

"I would just like to say that I like the cover that you posted today. I think its very cool and reminds me of... how we talked in class about Mr. Owen (or whoever the host is) wanting to play games and toy with them before he kills them (cause you know, they're like puppets on that cover."

I agree. That was one of the cooler ones.

    ReplyDelete
  29. QUESTION:

Can we just put a) then the awnser b) then the awnser c)then the awnser or should we put them all together.

ANSWER: I thought I already answered this one. Please read the comments if you need help to save us both time.

Either way is fine: one paragraph or separate.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Three ground rules:

First, I'm not going to publish complaints and negative comments. If you're experiencing frustration, as I said you can come get some help.

Second, please post in the current day. I'm not going to chase down comments that were published under an older day.

Third, be careful what links you send. They need to be appropriate.

    That's it! Great job everyone!

  31. Mr. Chappell, Thank you for being a most excellent teacher! You really are an inspiration to me and most of the people at this school. I'm so glad you picked a book we actually enjoy, and yet we're learning! Thanks and keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  32. QUESTION: Some of the questions asked were not answered. Can you plese answer them?

ANSWER: After the journals are passed in, we can have a class discussion on anything you couldn't find.

If many students couldn't find the information, I'll grade accordingly.

If you're one of the only ones who couldn't find something, then I'll grade accordingly.

    That's more than fair.

    ReplyDelete
  33. COMMENT: I just looked at wikipedia trying to find the answer for question 2, and it says who dies, when, and how. I suggest not looking there.

RESPONSE: Really good suggestion. That's a major SPOILER and will make your journey less fun.

Seriously, you guys inspire me. I'm lucky to be your teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another Question that is not going through: Do we have to do the bonus map?

Answer: Not at all. It's not even extra credit. It's just one of those things that shows off if you are really into it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry Lola, your question is not going through. Blogspot is acting funky.

I'm grading on content. The 4 sentences is a suggestion. You may only need 3, you may need 7. Think about what you're saying. Make sure you are specific, clear, to the point but with the 4ESSDs that we talked about today.
