Journal Questions:

1. ATTWN - The Soundtrack. Sometimes it helps to listen to "mood music" while reading to help your imagination to really feel the tone of the novel. Listen to the following passage of music here.

Does this fit with the tone and mood of the novel as you see it, or does it feel different to you? How so?

Is there another song that you can think of that better captures the mood to you? If so, what is the title of the music and the composer/performer? Why does this song fit better for you? (one paragraph)

2. A Searching We Will Go. Why do Lombard, Armstrong, and Blore decide to search the house and the island? What do they hope to accomplish? What is their plan and what will they do if they succeed? (one paragraph)

3. Author's use of Imagery. Read the following passage from chapter 7:

"She turned her face to Vera. There was no self-reproach, no uneasiness in those eyes. They were hard and self-righteous. Emily Brent sat on the summit of Indian Island, encased in her own armour of virtue."

Expand on what Agatha Christie is telling us about Brent in this passage. Based upon this description, how would you describe Emily Brent? What kind of person is she? (one paragraph)

4. *Bonus. In Charlotte Doyle there was a particular word used to describe a pointed weapon. In the movie Clue there was another particular word used to describe a knife-like object. In this chapter of ATTWN there is yet another word to describe a knife. The three different words are all synonyms, variations on the same idea.

See if you can name the three different vocabulary words, in order. (3 word list)

  4. QUESTION: Number one you only have to answer the questions that fit your rersponse, correct?

ANSWER: Just as it says. You answer the first part, and if you have another suggestion then you answer the second as well.

QUESTION: mr chapel do we have to suggest a song for the book if we think the one u showed the link 2 fits the book?

ANSWER: Nope. But don't forget to respond the first part. And do me a favor, break out some interesting adjectives and not just use the word "creepy." That gets old, fast.

Wow Agatha Kriste really did a good job throwing us around with guessing who the murderer was.

RESPONSE - Yeah, the ol' lady sure knows how to keep you guessin', don't she?

The thing is, Tom, you are putting energy into the story and staying focused. You get out what you put into it this.

QUESTION: Anonymous said... Can we take a break of doing this for 1 night

ANSWER: Sure. We've got weekends and a spring break coming. Hang in there.

I know some of you are telling me that it's hard to not read ahead to find out what happens next.

  10. QUESTION: Do we have to do #4 because it says bonus?

ANSWER: Nope. That's why it's a bonus. Just want to check and see who has recall and who wants to go above and beyond.

  11. Just to clear things up, if the question is a bonus then we don't have to do it but if we do answer it then we don't any extra credit or anthing? (I'm sorry this is going to sound snobbish) Then why would we want to do it? For fun?

ANSWER: Just do the minimum if that's what you're comfortable with. Different types of learners are motivated by different values.

I'm sure other students know what I mean. Some students enjoy going above and beyond, taking on extra challenges, and proving something to themselves.

    Others not so much.

  13. Didn't know if I should post this on today's blog, but it's a question about tuesday's prompts:
For number 2 I'm not sure if I totally missed this part or if I'm just overlooking something but I don't have any recollection of Armstrong, Lombard, or Blore searching the island. Did this happen in a previous chapter and you are just asking us now? Is there a certain page that this happened on? I apologize if this is just because I am oblivious to the incident. Thanks!

    ANSWER: I hope this helps.
