CHAPTER III

PLEASE, post your new comments on the current day's post, not the one from the first day. Thanks!

Feedback: One of the keys to success is finding ways to have fun with what you are doing. Think about how to make these journal responses a game for yourself.

ASSIGNMENTS

Vocabulary Words:

swan song, gramaphone, indictments, preposterous, naive

Journal Prompts:

1. Who Was Accused of What? List each character and the crime they are accused of from the voice on the gramophone. (short answers).

2. Central Object. The ceramic Indians will play a significant role in the story that follows. What important central objects or focal points have you seen before in other books, tv shows, or movies? For example, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the "wardrobe" is a very important object. Give your own example of a central object that helps drive the narrative from another story you've read or seen. Explain in detail, with examples of how that object works to shape and control that story. (1 paragraph)

3. The Call of Leadership. After the gramophone plays the record, which character or characters seem to step into leadership roles, attempting to take control of the situation, and how? Why do you think these people were the natural leaders? Explain and support your point with 3E SD. (about 1-3 paragraphs)

4. Play on Words. What does U. N. Owen really mean? (short answer)

5. Diabolic Machinations. What does the combination of the Ten Little Indians poem, the swan song record, the ceramic figurines, and the use of the name U.N. Owen tell you about the "dangerous and homicidal lunatic" who invited them to the island? Fully explain your ideas with well developed thoughts. (about 1-2 paragraphs)

  1. Notice that I put in recommended lengths. I hope this helps. The length really depends upon how specific you are and focused your ideas and word choices tend to be. Some students can write in three complex, controlled and smart sentences what other students can't communicate in three paragraphs.

What I'm saying is that the length really depends upon how clear, focused and specific your writing is.

  2. Mr. Chappell in the book gramaphone is listed multiple times. Should we use the first sentance it was listed in?

  3. Mr.Chappell,
When the voice on the gramaphone accuses the guests of killing different people they use the word "murdered," as well as the phrases, "brought about the death of," and "responsible for the death of," among others. Those all mean the same thing, right?

  9. I like how you wrote what the length of the answers should be, it helps. Before, I never knew if I had too much or too little writting.

  10. I have 2 questions:

RESPONSE: Nope. Not always. It's a good thing we have an hour in class devoted to doing the reading and the vocab. Two of tonight's questions are totally easy.

I'm sorry your afternoons are really busy. Good luck!

  16. Comment: These questions at the end of the day take a long time to do and whenever I am going to have a test the next day, I can't study for it because i'm staying up all night to do the questions.

Response: If you are struggling to just keep up with what everyone else is doing, perhaps it's time you get some help. I'm available during Rec time. I'm sorry you are experiencing frustration. This is a challenge, but I believe you can do it otherwise I wouldn't ask you to. I don't get the sense that for any of my students quitting is an option.

  17. COMMENT: I like how you wrote what the length of the answers should be, it helps. Before, I never knew if I had too much or too little writting.

RESPONSE: Good. Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm here to challenge you, but to help at the same time. :)

  18. Comment:

    I have 2 questions:
    1. Are the vocab. words in order on the board?
    2. Will the journal questions get harder and harder the more we go on?

Response: Hey Jack! Thanks for asking.

    1. Nope.

    2. I honestly don't see today's as harder than yesterdays, but I'd imagine it varies from person to person. So I guess that depends upon your skills and how quickly your mind gathers, sorts and documents your ideas. I'm guessing that some days will be more challenging than others, depending upon where your skills are.

  19. QUESTION: What year is this all taking place?

ANSWER: Great question. I don't think it says, exactly. But the novel was first published in 1939 and there are references to World War I, so it must be after 1918. If Macarthur was a General in WWI, and he's an old man now I think the logical guess would be sometime in the 1930s.

See how a bit of detective work can give you answers? Woah. How much COOLER would it have been if a student had actually helped a student find this answer, instead of the teacher... :)

  20. COMMENT: I am really confused on question 2. Can you help explain that better please?

    RESPONSE:

What important central objects or focal points have you seen before in other books, tv shows, or movies?

For example, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the "wardrobe" is a very important object.

Give your own example of a central object that helps drive the narrative from another story you've read or seen.

Explain in detail, with examples of how that object works to shape and control that story. (1 paragraph)

I'm not quite sure how to state it more clearly than that. What part is confusing to you?
