Kindness Narrative - 4 Sentence Version


Due Tuesday, students will have typed up a sentence for each of the four plot points of a narrative written around their chosen memory of kindness.

Teacher Model

Set up
Dear Diary:
On August 26th of 2014* in Mount Morris, Michigan several friends and I participated in the “Warrior Dash,” a 5K mud run over obstacles including flaming coals, chest-deep mud swamps, and wobbly rope bridges.

Development
We had just reached an obstacle called “Alcatraz” where you had to swim across a lake to a floating structure and then swim to the other side.

Climax
While I was dogpaddling in my group, I heard a guy crying for help and gasping as he went underwater, so I quickly swam back and helped to pull his body to shore.

Resolution
Upon reaching the other side, the man wheezed and coughed up the pond water that he’d swallowed, but he was very grateful to be alive.

* NOTE:  Students do not need to have the exact date.

* NOTE:  It is NOT recommended that anyone attempt to save someone from drowning without proper training.  Very often the person seeking to help risks becoming a victim themselves.

Will’s Sentence:
The song made him think of his past, of adolescence
and story time and early mornings, of his old piano teacher, of the sound of his parents talking, endlessly of things he’d learn when he was “older.”

Megan’s Sentence:
His dream the night before was about family, about comfort and joy and warmth, about his dog kissing everyone as they walked through the door, about laughing at his grandpa’s repeated jokes, wanting to dream this forever.

Katya’s Sentence:
The food made her think of the holidays, of mom and dad and her brothers, of family from all around, of the sound of children laughing, playing outside in the snow.

Sam’s Sentence:
The problem made the boy think of school, of friends and teachers and company, of quizzes in his classes, of the laughter of students’ voices, cracking endless jokes of excitement.

Michaels’ Sentence
The choking made Curry think of the finals, of the tough Cavaliers and the best player LeBron James, of crucial missed shots late in the 4th quarter, of “The Block,” winning their first championship of all time.

Ben’s Sentence
The tall building made him think of his job, of long meetings and exhausting days and horrible coffee, of snotty co-workers around the conference table, of the tedious voice of his boss, explaining his endless presentation of dullness.

Enzo’s Sentence:
The rain made him think of solitude, of anger, and evil and malice, of important people around a table, of the sound of their voices, telling others how to rule the world.

Brendan’s sentence
The blade made him think of death, of blood and war and ruin, of warriors on the barren battlefield, of the clash of bloodthirsty fighter’s swords, continuing their limitless reign of terror.

Sofia’s sentence
The flavor made him remember about his childhood, about family and fun and playing , about people laughing all day and night, about the sound of his mother's voice,  singing her favorite song to him every night.

Aristotle's Sentence
This orange robe reminds me of the pagoda, of worship and enlightenment and brothers, of faces around the ancient shrine, of the chanting of fulfilled men’s voices, telling their untold love of Buddhism.

Expert Sentence

Jaden’s sentence
