Classroom Expectations: Reading Out Loud

As we prepare our students for high school, being able to read from a text out loud in front of a group is a basic skill. It’s also a necessary skill needed to be successful in society.

I recognize that some students may have social anxiety, or be afraid of making mistakes, or are worried about being judged by their peers.

Almost daily I repeat the message about how making mistakes is an important part of learning.  I do everything within my power to promote and safe and nurturing environment.

In my experience, the best way to overcome this sort of social anxiety is through regular practice.  Avoidance only makes it worse.

Also, public speaking and reading is in the 8th Grade Common Core of Language Arts

Speaking & Listening » Grade 8

Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.

If any parent or student has concerns about this expectation, please don't hesitate to contact me so that we can discuss it.

Best,
Mr. Chappell
