Guide to In-Text Citations and Using Quotations as Evidence


In text citation examples:

"blah blah blah blah blah,” (7).
NOTE:  The period always comes after the in-text citation, NOT at the end of the text within the quotes.


“blah blah blah  / blah blah blah ,” (9-10).
NOTE:  The slash shows the line break in poetry


“blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah,” (12, 25).
                NOTE:  The ellipses shows a jump to another section within a quote.  Then use a comma in the in-text citation to show the break.


“blah blah blah [the weed itself] blah blah,” (13).
                NOTE:  The brackets show an inserted helpful detail from the student
